Dear Dr. Onslow, I found your article very thought-provoking. I wanted to ask what your hypothesis was for children who do not recover from stuttering using Lidcombe's verbal response contingent stimulation. Since this method of treatment implies that stuttering is behavioral in nature, could it be that there is some other component at work, such as genetics? If there is some other underlying factor, then how would a behavioral method of treatment be beneficial? Wouldn't that be setting the child up for failure and exacerbate any negative attitudes towards communication? What would you recommend as treatment for a preschool child who stutters in this situation? Thank you for sharing!
