I think it is regrettable that the time allowed for the study of fluency disorders has decreased. However, being a current graduate student, there is so much under our scope of practice that “touching” on every subject is necessary. I currently attend a university in Rural Western Kansas. We do not have many individuals with fluency disorders in our clinic. In fact, this year was the first year one of the students worked with a PWS since 2 to 3 years ago. Even though we do not receive much exposure from “hands-on” experience, our fluency class requires us to attend the conference along with many other lab activities (e.g., stuttering outside of class, exploring the web, developing case studies, and creating our own CD with examples of stuttering). I feel that this conference allows us to begin to understand what PWS go through and how frustrating it truly can be on the other side of the table. I was wondering what other ways you feel would be beneficial for graduate students in rural America to truly prepare us to understand and help individuals who stutter?
