Hi Janet; I am an adult stutterer and not a speech pathologist so I am reluctant to answer your question. Advertising one's stuttering requires a degree of emotional and intellectual maturity that 8 year olds don't posses. The world can be a very fearsome place for a child with a vulnerability like stuttering. The therapies that work best for children are those that focus on positve re-inforcement by altering the child's environment to make it more stutter-friendly and/or by rewarding fluent speech and not punishing stuttering as in, for example, the Lidcombe program. It's best if you pose your question to the "ask the Profs" panel.
