Dee; As a kid, unlike many children who stutter,I wasn't teased or bullied because of my stutter. The reactions that I got from my peers, teachers and other adults, however, conviced me that stuttering was something odd or bad and that I should "get over it." My parents were bewildered by my speech and constantly fretted and wondered why I couldn't just stop stuttering. I internalized all these reactions and became harder on myself than any of my listeners were. And the harder I was on myself the worst my speech got. I almost dropped out of high school because I couldn't handle the real or (and this is important) IMAGINED demands that were put on my speech.
