Alicia; I do use controls like easy onsets. The trick is to not think of them as controls because the more you try to control your speech the worse or robotic it often gets. I prefer to use the words techniques or modifiers. The more you practise these modifiers in real life situations the more they become a part of you. The secret is to play with them, do them in the most difficult situations, and not worry about listeners reactions. It's not a quick fix, but with continuous practise you slowly discover that you can modify your speech so as to stutter more easily. And as so many people on this list keep reiterating, non-avoidance of speaking is central to all of this. Wishing you and the young man all the best.
