Dear Tabitha In Russia today, two methods are used to cure stuttering. The first method hinges on the idea that you must cause the sufferer to focus on his/her stuttering and in this way change his/her attitude towards the very fact of it. The second is the exact opposite – turn the person’s attention away from his/her own speech. Each method creates a new dilemma – insufficient control/too much control. Many talented and experienced specialists have observed the fact that the speech therapist’s fixation on the problem only causes the stuttering to become more prevalent. The real cure lies in an more individual approach, a better understanding of each individual and the causes of his/her stuttering and, the consequent selection of methods for curing the patient.
