Lee thanks for your well-written and well-stated paper. I hope to use it with some of my current and future clients. So often I struggle as an SLP (who does not have the experience of having stuttered) to promote the concept that therapy is so much more than reducing stuttering behaviors. Your “life lessons” speak volumes towards what therapy is all about. I especially liked your statement that stuttering can be a gift. Many of the individuals I have had the good fortune to work with are, in my opinion, persons of strong character, slow to judge, and basically display attributes of one who has had to learn to cope with the many hurdles life has thrown in his/her path. I often wonder who benefits more from therapy, my clients or me!
