Hi Yelena, There were no specific strategies utilized by the self-help group I attneded in high school. Self-Help/ Mutual Aid groups by their nature( as opposed to therapy support groups) are typically not intended to teach or stress specific therapeuatic techniques or srategies. Rather, they are centered on sharing expreiential knowledge in a safe and supportive atmosphere. Certainly, there are some who use specific strategies they have found helpful and may share their experiences about how and when those strategies are utilzed. Self-help/mutual aid is more about creating a safe environment to discuss stuttering openly and frankly. By observing and interacting with others who are more successful in speech management and communication many individuals begin to change the way they feel about themselves as people who stutter. This is the first step in the journey from being a victim to becoming a survivor. Ultimately, individuals will discover on their own or with the help of a speech pathologist useful strategies to improve their fluency and / or communication skills. Please see my response to Gina re: my family. Thanks and good luck!
