Hi Tara, I always felt that what Dr. Malnati was trying to convey was that my stuttering was not an issue for him. At the same time I felt he was trying to tell me (without actualy saying it) that he did not think it should be an issue for me either. Many times actions speak louder than words. There was a lot of non-verbal communication between the two of us that to me spoke volumes. I suppose what I am saying, Tara, is that we did not talk about it verbally we DEALT with my speech, my fears and my anxieties a great deal. I hope that makes some sense to you. The reason I found the courage to walk into the clinic was that in that moment my desire to become a veterinarian finally outweighed my fear of stuttering. That is what always drives us past our fears. For those of us who stutter there is always the choice of being silent. However, for most the desire to speak outstrips the safe annonymity of silence. Down deep we all want to be heard. The strength of that desire has much to do with how willing we are to take risks in order to acheive our goals...our dreams.
