Hi Orlin, Thank you so much for your kind words and enthusiastic comments on emotional intelligence! The issue as to whether EI is essentially a new name for old constructs is of paramount importance. There are disagreements among scientists regarding conceptualization, definitions, and measurements of EI. Some call EI "a myth" or an "elusive construct." This is because some popular definitions of EI are too broad, sensational, and over-inclusive, with unsubstantiated optimistic claims. The works of Mayer and Salovey and their colleagues claim that EI is a new psychological construct, representing a mental ability which is restricted to cognitive and emotional system interactions. Hopefully, future research will establish better boundaries for the EI construct.
