Hi Dr. Reichel, I am a graduate student in SLP. Also, the topic has interested me from the time I read Dan Goleman's "Emotional Intelligence." On both counts, I thoroughly enjoyed your article and saved it to read and re-read as it is both pithy and informative. You address our minds by providing valuable resources for SLPs whose demanding graduate preparation does not include formal training in EI. And you encourage our hearts by sharing your vision for our profession that is all the more stirring given your 28+ years of experience as a therapist. There are many SLP graduate students such as myself who chose the profession for its emotional rewards and potential for positive human impact. Like my colleague Joe (previous posting to this one), I too was thinking about the relationship between psychology and SLP practice. Given our shared idealism and desire to help, as well as our interest in EI, what guidelines might you suggest to help beginning clinicians determine when to refer out to a licensed psychologist?
