In this paper, the author briefly mentions “cultural influences on emotions” and the affect these influences can have on the emotional intelligence of PWS. I think that this concept is very important and often overlooked. In our culture a great amount of emphasis is placed on the language one uses, and being that the first impression people usually get of one another is their speech and use of language it is quite clear the potential stress and harm this can put on PWS. People are often judged on their speech and those who do not speak as the majority do, such as those with non-standard dialects, foreign accents, or in this case PWS, can be wrongfully perceived as being less intelligent or otherwise deficient. This stress then not only makes it harder for PWS to overcome their ailment but may also have negative social outcomes in other areas of that person’s life such as relationships and employment.
