Hello Kate, Thank you for your thoughts and insightful questions. In response to your first question, the EI construct and the synergistic model do include some similar components, such as awareness of attitudes and feelings, assertiveness, management of emotions, and self-esteem. In response to your second question, I'm not aware of studies that examine the degree of correlation between measures of EI and the scales you mentioned. However, I can speculate that such correlations do exist, and maybe will be explored in the future. In response to your third question, SLPs can no longer rely on traditional fluency shaping approaches in dealing with such complex issues as emotions, anxiety, or negative thoughts, that inevitably encompass the stuttering syndrome. The "fix-it” approach, which has been successful in some situations, does not apply to a stressful situation. In addition, without addressing affective and cognitive aspects of stuttering, without working on self-regulating strategies, the regression of fluency will occur. As to your last question, my response to Ricky on Oct. 12, 2007 should serve as a response to you as well. Keep asking good questions! Isabella Reichel
