Amy and Kirsten, good question. During role-playing situations we may practice speech tools, but at first, we are just working on being open about stuttering. Once students have gotten a few stuttering interviews under their belt, I may ask them, “What speech tool would you like to try while giving an interview?” or “What speech tool do you think may help you during an interview?” It has been my experience that different children will have their own favorite speech tool or tools. I explore their answers and help students role-play the interviews with their chosen speech tool(s). Some students find that they enjoy using speech tools during this activity while others simply want to focus on the content (the questions) and leave speech tools for another activity. Peter
