Hi Angie, Thank you for your comments; I am glad that you are reading and enjoying the papers. You are asking a good question. When I encounter the scenario you described, (i.e., in fact, for most clinical cases), I create opportunities for the person to experience communication success. Nothing is as motivating and affirming as success. All the encouragement in the world cannot come close to the positive impact of directly experiencing success. By developing such a foundation of success and by providing genuine and descriptive feedback enabling the person to begin to realize the wonder of what s/he is accomplishing, that person eventually begins to change the way he interprets present events and anticipates future events. What we are doing is seeing through the client’s eyes and creating new opportunities, thereby enabling the client to entertain changes to his personal construct. The client, by experiencing successes, is being provided alternative interpretations and predictions to consider. By the way, I am really glad that you are one of our students at WCU. Keep up the good work! Good luck. David Shapiro
