Hi Alissa, Thanks for your thoughts and your question. Your question is more complex than it might appear on the surface. In order to enable a client to succeed, I focus on success. What this means is that I create opportunities for the client (and the family) to succeed, all the while providing the client with a new set of experiences from which s/he will begin to interpret the present and anticipate the future on the basis of an alternative set of assumptions (i.e., success). You may want to look over my responses to the last several postings where I have addressed this question in greater detail. Also, you may want to take a look at my book for more detailed coverage. By the way, I hope you realize what a fascinating career you have chosen. This is my 31st year as speech-language pathologist. I am even more excited with the career at this time than I was when I first began. Keep asking good questions. Good luck. David Shapiro
