Dear Lynne, thank you for your encompassing, insightful answer. I would agree with what you said if rapport cannot be established at all. somethimes it is something intangible such as chemistry between personalities (for lack of a more scientific term:). I would diplomatically pose the question to the patient/parent if they thought they would feel more at ease with somebody different trying to make it not embarrassing to them (feeling that they reject me and that it might have implications for their treatment). I worked in Austria as a patient advocate and also did mediating between patients. It was a rehabilitation center for post-surgery patients (knee and hips, mostly older people). Stuttering therapy more than some other areas in speech pathology require the patient to leave their comfort zone. So, trust is very very important. What a challenge, and how wonderful if one can make a difference!
