I am a graduate student in speech-language pathology at Iowa and am currently taking a class on stuttering treatment. “Creating Conditions for Change” was a very informative and insightful article, and I think the lessons about change are not only valuable to SLPs working with people who stutter, but also those working in any other realm of therapy. In my class, we have been discussing that technique may play only a small role in what makes therapy work, whereas other variables, such as the client’s expectancy for change, the client-clinician relationship, and other characteristics about the client and his/her environment may have more of an effect on the success of therapy. Do you have any suggestions for SLPs who are hoping to help facilitate change in clients who stutter, either by improving the therapeutic bond, adjusting the client's outlook, or motivating clients to be accepting of change?
