Bernadette, excellent question. In my clinical experience, I have definitely seen fewer escape and avoidance behaviors in this population and, likely related to this, is that I have often seen lack of awareness of the disfluency at all. Of course, every case is different, but what I have found is some struggle and tension in response to stuttered moments (moreso in the Asperger population than in others on the autism spectrum), which of course may represent some avoidance of the moment of stuttering, but less conscious avoidance strategies, like avoiding certain words or speaking situations.
