Bernadette, Based on my clinical experience, I would agree with Kathy in that some of the children with Asperger's Syndrome demonstrated few struggle behaviors and minimal awareness. In contrast, the two clients in this article did (inconsistently)demonstrate effortful speech (tension), perhaps interpreted as strategies to move through the word or reactions to frustration rather than escape or avoidance behaviors. I have also found that some cases of Asperger's syndrome exhibited a fair number of interjections and circumlocutions which may have been either avoidance related or associated with difficulties in verbal expression. We would need to study a larger number of children with ASD and disfluency to really identify any trends. At this point, we hope the case descriptions will provide some food for thought in the area of treatment planning and programming.
