Karen, This is an interesting question. Of course, I donít know the answer! I evaluated another child who was 10 years old who had autistic disorder and intellectual impairment with the same profile as C2. At the time, I conjectured that he had, at that point, developed enough language to become disfluent. So perhaps the language skill may be the factor, and certainly language development would be affected by intellectual impairment. It is interesting to note that C2 had an adolescent onset of seizure disorder. This is not unusual for adolescents with both autism and cognitive impairment. So, I might also want to consider how other conditions like seizure disorder (and the neurological changes they represent) might interact with speech and language.
