Jenny, You summed that up well regarding taking a broad, holistic approach, and it sounds like you know this from various perspectives. I agree that sometimes social skills can take precedence over fluency; but at the same time I urge you to consider the role that disfluency plays in possible social skills development and later issues. That is, if a child has difficulty communicating effectively, they are often left out of social interactions, and therefore don't learn the social rules, then therefore are left out of more social interactions, and the gap grows wider. Just something to consider--all these issues may be separate in ways, but also work together in social interaction.
