Dear Jasmine, Thanks for the question. Most of the stutterers who attend group therapy experience a reduction in stuttering, but not all do. Several have commented that they cannot believe how fluent they are in the group. One person, who has been a "regular" for about four years went for about two years with amazing fluency (for him). Since then, however, he has experienced a few groups where his stuttering has been more "normal" compared to outside situations. For a very small number of stutterers, the group was anxiety provoking initially, and they did not experience any of the temporary fluency. A few of these individuals decided the group was not for them. Aside from these exceptions, however, as a general rule, stutterers are relieved when stuttering is the topic of conversation and something not to be avoided or something that might detract from their participation. This relief often reduces the tendency to fear and avoid. One "veteran" has told several newcomers that the group is a "safe haven" for her. I hope this answers your question. Ken
