Thanks for your comment and question. Of course I think about the client in a holistic sense and I hope that that has little to do with my initial focus on child language! I think that's just good clinical practice. I would imagine that most clinicians (and I would hope ALL clinicians) find that they need to think about the emotional factors that are related to a client's stuttering. That's where the focus on communication comes in. If you are just going to focus on the speech behaviors and not consider context, you really are missing the intention of that speech attempt to begin with. Far more learned people than I have written about consideration of emotions and I would defer to them. Barry Guitar, David Shapiro, Ed Conture, Walt Manning and others have wonderful texts that take the issues you asked about into consideration.
