Thanks for your comments, Tara. Yes, part of our aims are to have the CD used both in therapy & also with self help groups, at open days, conferences etc. It's an excellent vehicle for helping people who stammer be more open about stammering & for other people to gain an understanding of some of the issues related to stammering. The inspiration came from different areas: 1. Hilary's enthusiasm for group therapy for children. 2.My own experiences of facilitating group work with young people & adults (both stammering related & non-stammering related). 3.My experiences whilst attending an intensive Speech & Language Therapy course at City Lit, London. It was at City Lit that I wrote "Exercising the Exorcised" (track 6). 4. The desire of Doncaster Stammering Association self help group members to help raise awareness. Why music? The arts can have a powerful effect on the individual. The group dynamics which develop through the song writing process can be very profound. The confidence required to sing in to a microphone in front of peers & professional musicians is tremendous. The pride, & increase in self esteem, after succesfully creating & recording a track is amazing. It is " a kind of magic" which can stay with a person for a lifetime. Music is also very accessible. The lyrics are an excellent way for people to actually "hear" the stories & the messages, & CDs have "street cred". Another CD? We would like to develop an on going arts based project which would encompass visual art, digital imaging, film, spoken word, drama & music. The details are still being discussed. The issue of funding will, inevitably, have a significant impact upon the development of the project. Watch this space!
