Liz Thanks for your comments and interest in our research. It’s important to remember that we are not saying that perfectionism causes stuttering, so whether you were a perfectionist during childhood does not make you a PWS, rather we believe it is one of many ingredients that may make it more likely for a child to notice and be concerned about stuttering. We also believe that being perfectionistic may make it more likely that an individual who stutters may be more distressed about the stuttering. CBT can reduce perfectionism and self-defeating thoughts. All of the subjects in our study completed our CBT program. Many reported at 15 week follow-up that they were still applying these principles on their own. I think all individuals can have self-defeating thoughts at times and CBT is a way to change that pattern. Best Regards, Barbara
