Shirin, Congratulations on your choice to pursue a master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology! Thank you for choosing our article to read and respond to! You posed an interesting question. In response, what we mean is that stuttering and perfectionism are not causal. Rather, they are associated. In other words, perfectionism and stuttering may be related factors. For individuals who stutter and are perfectionistic by nature, they may be less able to tolerate their disfluencies. The more they attempt to control their disfluent speech, the more tension they may exert. We are saying that this cycle may be part of the difficulty and deserves further research.
