I tend to think of myself as a perfectionist, as I am very critical of my performance in several important areas of my life. I wonder how you view perfectionism in terms of its origin. Would you consider it a learned behavior or a hereditary trait? The reason I ask is because viewing it as learned or genetic can significantly affect how it would be addressed in treatment. In other words, if it were viewed as a learned behavior, the ultimate goal would be to unlearn it. However, if perfectionism were considered to be hereditary, the ultimate goal would be to make communication in the face of stuttering and perfectionism easier for the person in question and hopefully reduce its effect on the person's communicative abilities.
