Joelle Thank you for your interest in our article. Good luck in working with the three year old. When I work with young children who stutter who are also perfectionistic, I try to introduce activities that show the child and family that it’s OK to be messy or silly because the world is an imperfect place. We might finger paint, knock down towers of blocks, or throw water balloons and have fun doing it. I find that I say things like “No big deal” during these activities to help the child and family realize that its OK not be perfect at all times. I also help the parent and child begin to notice that even great speakers are dysfluent and that dysfluency and other mistakes are a typical part of speaking. Best, Barbara
