Catastrophising is assuming the worst will happen. For example, in the study one of our participants was very worried about the fact that she had to give a presentation to a small group of colleagues at work. She was so concerned about this that much of her waking hours were consumed with thinking of the terrbile result. She assumed she would make a fool of herself and be fired. In reality, she did well and her colleagues thanked her for conducting the presentation! Many people who do not stutter engage in catastrophizing. Some people do it more than others. The point is to become aware of the alternative outcomes to a situation or thought! It was a beneficial experience for our participant.
