Hello Fort Hays State University. The biggest difficulty with using elements of CBT with very young children is being able to relate the information in language that could be understood by a very young child. But in your treatment sessions, you can apply some principles in different ways. For instance by having fun with the child, being silly, and allowing them to color outside of the lines, finger paint, build up towers of blocks and then smashing them down, and having the attitude that all of this is “no big deal” and just part of the silly, normal messiness of life, we can help show young children that the world is an imperfect place at that it’s OK. With older children, you can help them notice the normal imperfections in other people’s speech so they begin to see that speech can be disfluent and that is also OK. Hope this is helpful. Best, Barbara
