Dr. Amster and Dr. Klein, I thought this article was very enlightening. The correlation between individuals who stutter and perfectionism is interesting. Currently I am in graduate school, but I think it will be important when working with individuals who stutter to be aware of whether or not they possess perfectionist tendencies. If they do, it may be helpful to address that during therapy. As illustrated within your study, utilizing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) may be a beneficial approach for these individuals. I can see how replacing an individual’s problem beliefs with more positive thoughts can be advantageous for an individual who stutters. However, this does not seem like it would be easy to accomplish. In both of your experiences, what techniques proved to be most helpful when using this approach? Thanks again for submitting this paper, I enjoyed reading it!
