Megan, Thanks for your comments. You are correct in your perception. Not all people who stutter have this trait. Our study indicated that most of our participants had perfectionistic tendencies and had been that way as children. Out participants also indicated that pressure to achieve and excel was very common throughout their lives. Your client may have been different. The fact that he noted his concern about how others perceive him indicates that he may engage in ‘mind reading’ as one of his automatic thoughts. CBT would be worthy of exploration. I have continued to use CBT with clients in the clinic (along with graduate students) and within my private practice. It has been very beneficial. Clients become more tolerant of themselves and begin to look at emotionally charged encounters from a new perspective! Evelyn
