Kaitlin, Thanks for your comments! In our study, one of the participants had covert stuttering. He was equally as distressed as the people who stuttered openly. He was able to change words prior to stuttering on them but found that to be a major burden on his life. He, as the others, believed themselves to be perfectionistic and to have been so since childhood. Regarding birth order, there are theories indicating that first born children have more expectations put on them by parents and tend to be ‘high achievers’ compared to subsequent children in the family. However, there are other theories to the contrary. I would venture to say that the theories are generalized. Each family is unique in its own set of expectations and responsibilities. It is probably wise to avoid stereotypes. Evelyn
