Hi Megan, I'm grateful to you for taking the time to read my paper and participate in the threaded online discussion. I did receive speech therapy when I was young (around about the time that the wheel was invented) :-)but I recall very little of what it involved. I also submitted myself to further therapy later in life and, although I was able to gain greater fluency in a controlled environment, I could never hold onto those gains when I returned into the outside world. It was heartbreaking to have it cruelly snatched away. As a result, I vowed that I would never again place myself in such a situation. However, in 2000, my wife spotted a flyer in a shop window advertising an open day for the McGuire Programme. I was so sceptical and told her that I was not interested. Thankfully, she persevered and persuaded me to attend. The rest is history, as they say. :-) The difference was that the Programme dealt holistically with the problem and did not focus solely on the mechanics of speech. It also offered a support network 24/7 - something that previous approaches/therapies lacked. My wife has always loved me unconditionally but she knew that I frequently had to accept second best because of my stutter. That's why she persuaded me to give it one last try. The following verse encompasses my feelings for her: My stutter has been such a load. In childhood, the sad seeds were sowed. But thanks to my wife. I have a new life. An incredible debt she is owed. You may wish to have sight of numerous other articles about stuttering that I have written during recent years. They are listed in my earlier reply to Jonas Berinyuy. Thank you, once again, for taking the time to enter into correspondence. I wish you every success with your studies. Kindest regards Alan (PS Did you know that the name Megan originates from my home country - Wales?
