As an undergraduate student I found this article to be extremely helpful in terms of treatment considerations for disfluency. This review has reaffirmed the importance of considering a stuttering continuum for treatment. It is important for students to realize that treatment can vary from “an exciting experience” to something that is challenging and even negative for a client. It is easy to assume that stuttering treatment should be positive and beneficial to clients from the initial therapy session, but this ideal is not realistic. As a student I am learning a variety of structured treatment modalities; however, this article has made evident that stuttering is not a disorder of single nature and furthermore encompasses many idiosyncratic aspects that must be considered in treatment. Your article provides exceptional information to students like myself regarding the realities of stuttering treatment. Focusing on individual characteristics such as a client’s self concept and level of anxiety is as important as the core stuttering behaviors that the person may exhibit. The affective issues that underlie overt stuttering behaviors make fluency treatment more comprehensive by addressing the “whole person”. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise!
