Thank you Colleen. I certainly think that for most people, the fears and anxioties reduce as they become more fluent, and more predictably and easily fluent. Sometimes using aspects of cognitive behaviour therapy is useful. Using a hierarchy of situations of difficulty can help with desensitisation. LOTS of guided practice can help (not just being sent out to do talking tasks, but going with the clinician) also helps. However, I also think that some people who are so anxious that they will not happily put themselves in a social situation etc need the help of a skilled counsellor or psychologist.
