First of all, it should be mandatory that anyone who claims competence in treating stuttering should get the necessary training relating specifically to stuttering. That sounds obvious to people who stutter but strangely enough -- and shamefully -- there are plenty of SLPs claiming they possess that competence but do not. So take fluency courses, do practicum with stuttering clients and get ASHA's SID4 fluency specialty certification. Going forward, on the SID4 fluency specialty area on the ASHA site under professional issues, they've listed something called "multidisciplinary interaction." It is my hope that one day clinicians will take seriously this long overdue idea in the treatment of stuttering and enlist the help of experts with necessary tools outside of speech-language pathology in a collaborative treatment team approach. edfeuer@mts.net
