I think that it is vital that parents are there for all the time when their children are with us - so they can see how their children are changing etc and so we can see how they are working with their children to help them facilitate fluency. I feel strongly that with younger children the parents have the responsibility to work on the fluency with the child as young children can only cope with some decisions etc. I think it is very rare that a child is not aware they are stuttering - and certainly they do not like it. They may not admit to wanting to do something about it, because often they are unsure of what that involves or will mean for them. However, therapy needs to be a very positive experinece so the child will be happy to come etc. If a child genuinely is not worried about their speech but the parent is (and the child really does not want to work on changing)then it would seem to be futile.
