Hello Andrew. There are several articles I can refer you to that show evidence for positive outcomes (in terms of fluency) with smooth speech. However, it is also a fact (as you so rightly infer) that people fluctuate in their fluency, or in their ability to use fluency techniques for a variety of reasons. The issue we are becoming more focussed on is how to manage relapse. Certainly, we know that severty of stuttering is an important factor in predicting outcome with smooth speech treatment. If you would like to email me (s.block@latrobe.edu.au) I will forward you some evidence.
