I am a new clinician with a young adult client who stutters. The naturalness of speech is a big issue during treatment right now. Like you said, speech naturalness can be a huge issue for someone trying to become comfortable with themselves as they endeavor to maintain fluency. It is difficult for me to model smooth speech without sounding unnatural myself. I am curious to how this helps my client’s self-evaluation of his own speech when he feels my model is unnatural. As a clinician, how do I help my client feel more comfortable with himself and his own speech when he doesn’t agree that slow, even rated speech (as I model for him) sounds natural?
