As an undergraduate student, I must say that articles such as this one are quite helpful inasmuch as they shed greater light on the factors necessary for being an effective clinician. A number of points in the article really stood out to me. One such point stressed the idea of staying up to date on the latest research and methods of treatment--no doubt continuing education is essential in striving to be the best one can be. Also, the article served as a reminder of what I have heard so many times before when it emphasized the importance of being flexible--what works for one client may be ineffectual for another. Besides presenting both of the former ideas, the article did a wonderful job discussing the difficulty of developing a treatment schedule that works well for busy clients with many other commitments. I can certainly see now how good results could be seriously hindered by a hit-and-miss therapy schedule. How do clinicians and clients deal with those sorts of inflexible circumstances? Believe me, I am already scratching my head in search of solutions. Finally, I was intrigued by the idea of web-based self-therapy. I hope to hear more about such techniques in the future. What are the implications for the field of speech-language pathology if self-therapy techniques prove to be a huge success? I must admit, this being my first exposure to the notion of web-based self-therapy, that I am somewhat skeptical. Truly, though, we will simply have to wait and see. No doubt much good could result if those practices work. In conclusion, thanks once again for bringing each of the former ideas into clearer focus for me.
