Hi Melanie One way to help is to tape the person so they can hear what they sound like when they are fluent. They will often say it sounds better than they thought. Also, friends can be very useful as they can be asked to give honest feedback about how they think their friend sounds. However, having said that, if someone is stuttering very severely they may need to foresake naturalness for fluency - and sometimes those people will say that they do not care how they sound, they just want to get some control over how they speak. If someone is anxious they may need to focus on using speech that is slightly more unnatural to maintain control over their fluency and then increase their naturalness as they become less anxious.
