Thanks, Tom. You're so right that stuttering is just a part of this society as any other disability and that stuttering needs the same attention, treatment and people with other disabilities. The problem is that, if we say stuttering is nothing special (or a gift!), than decision makers will not help us. If we tell the world we need help, people might pity us. If we claim that we too are disabled, many people who stutter feel they don't belong there. So the answer is to try and put ourselves in a place where there is a balance between all these opinions. Tough, but not impossible. Would I give up my stutter? If it would slowly dissapear, by training, by age, sure, as it's hard work to stutter. On a "bad" day, I get a headache, muscle pains and even hickups! People don't understand me, and want me to repeat myself, which causes more stuttering. But at all costs? No way. No brain surgery for me thank you. No hiding to pretend I don't stutter. No pills that turn me into a zombie. No quick fix that will make me happy one day and will make me stutter again the next. I'd rather say like Gloria Gayner: "I am what I am and what I am needs no excuses!" Keep talking! Anita
