Wow, I loved the way you guys handled this. I too believe that the therapeutic relationship is what makes or breaks therapy - any therapy, not just speech, but since this is what we are talking about, I'll stick to speech! As a PWS myself, who has been covert most of my life, the understanding and therapuetic alliance is what has been most helpful to me. I have learned from Joe K, but also from other clinicians who do not stutter. What is most important to me is presence during the therapy situation, and I feel that can be accomplished by either a fluent or stuttering therapist. I also like when I am challenged or pushed to come out of my comfort zone, and good therapists can do that, whether fluent or not. I commend both Joes to rising to the challenge of this question, and understanding that both can have a potentially profound impact on a person who stutters. What did you guys do to write this? Did you collaborate by phone? Did you have to compromise? Thanks for a great persepctive article.
