I found this paper to be interesting and extremely relevant. I believe that the relationship between client and clinician is of utmost importance in therapy regardless of whether the clinician is a Person who Stutters (PWS) or not. That relationship must be based on mutual trust and respect, both which do not relate to the clinician’s speech. I believe that as long as the clinician is empathetic towards the PWS’s feelings and attitudes about their speech, it does not matter whether the clinician speaks fluently or not. The paper had some pretty interesting considerations. As a graduate student who is not a PWS, I am constantly reminding myself to feel empathetic about each individual PWS’s experiences and with that in mind, I try to create the most supportive therapeutic environment possible. Thank you Joe & Joe for contributing!
