Thanks, Mary. My stuttering is very "out there." I am definitely someone still managing my stuttering rather than someone close to considering themselves "recovered." During therapy sessions, I am more fluent than outside of therapy (no surprise). I have actually never had an experience where someone has questioned my competency because of my stuttering. I have had parents ask me matter-of-factly if it does, I explain that it doesn't, and everyone who has asked me that has seemed satisfied with my answer. Also, for any client over the age of six, I make it really clear to the client (or parents) that my goal for my clients is to get them to be really good communicators in all environments. Clients also become MORE fluent, but that is not the goal. If they want to only work on fluency, I am not the person to do that with -- not because I stutter, but because I think having fluency as a goal is silly (to use a technical term)... would you rather have no disluencies in your speech or would you rather be a great talker, presenter, conversationalist? To me, the answer is an easy one. Take care, Joe K.
