You are right, Mary. It is both competition and international teamwork. Generally more and more resarch are done in cooperative multicenter reseach networks, and it has been easier because of the internet, e-mails and other networks. The best example on a very quick cooperative research was how we prevented the spread of a SARS pandemic. I live in a small country, Denmark, with 5 millions residents. We contribute with one per cent of all research in the world but because we cooperate with researchers all over the world we have personal access to almost any kind of reseach made all over the world. In the past, international communication and cooperation were more difficult and slower. In stuttering research and therapy there have also been many disputations. France and the German-speaking area in Europe were dominating in stuttering therapy throughout the nineteenth century. After World War II, North America has been dominating.
