Thank you, Corinne, for your interest and your feedback. The reference is J.F. Dieffenbach: Die Heilung des Stotterns durch eine neue chirurgisch Operation. Förster, Berlin 1841. The method was not "bizarre" at that time. Diffenbach establish the science of modern surgery and was the author of manny textbooks in surgery. Read more about him at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johann_Friedrich_Dieffenbach I do not know if any approach has been bizarre at the time it was used. When creed was more integrated in the European society we had some more bizarre approaches, such as the Rev.F. Blume from Herzegerode in Germany. He used respiration exercises, tongue exercises and smooth onset in pronouncing one word for each step when climbing the stairs inside the church tower (F. Blume: Neuste Heilmethode des Stotterübels. Basse, Quedlinburg, 1841, and Rafael Coën: Pathologie und Therapie des Stammels und der Verwandten Sprachstötungen. Ferdinand, Stuttgart, 1889).
