I found your article very interesting. I remember learning about the Bates device in my Fluency Disorders class. I really enjoyed learning about all of the other bizarre methods of treating stuttering that have been used throughout history. Some of it was not only useless, but down-right scary. I think that the timeline you described can really help us appreciate how far we’ve come scientifically in the treatment of stuttering from the “quackery” that you mentioned.
